From Disney magic and questionable music to terrible drivers and basic human kindness.
Greetings, my lovelies! โ๐
It’s a beautiful October morning here in Tucson, Arizona, and the desert has finally stopped trying to cook us alive. The cooler air feels wonderful, the fur babies are happier, and I’ve been enjoying my early morning magic bean potion on the patio while the birds conduct their daily neighborhood meeting.
And guess what? I FINALLY GOT TO WEAR MY DISNEY SWEATSHIRT!
WOOT WOOT!!!
Yes, I’m 56 years old. Yes, I’m excited about a Disney sweatshirt. And yes, I have opinions about anyone who thinks there’s an age limit on enjoying Disney.
Which brings me to today’s writing prompt: What’s a harmless opinion you’ll die on a hill defending?
ONE?!
Oh, my sweet summer child.
I have enough opinions to establish my own mountain range, complete with hiking trails, scenic overlooks, and a gift shop selling sarcastic T-shirts.
Some are silly, some are nostalgic, and a few might make somebody clutch their pearls so tightly they leave fingerprints. A couple go beyond harmless preferences into things I genuinely believe matter.
So grab your coffee, tea, or whatever magical concoction keeps you functioning.
Welcome to my mountain range. Watch your step. ๐
Hill #1: Mornings Are Better Than Evenings โ๐
I will happily plant my flag on this hill before sunrise.
There’s something magical about the early morning hours, especially when the air is cool and the neighborhood is still quiet. I love stepping onto the patio with my steaming cup of magic bean potion, breathing in the fresh air, and listening as the birds begin their morning conversations.
The sky slowly brightens, the world starts waking up, and for a little while, there are no demands, no rushing, and no nonsense.
Don’t get me wrong. I love a cozy evening, especially now that we’re getting our fire pit ready for cooler nights outside. But mornings offer something different: a fresh beginning before the world has had a chance to get on my nerves.
Mornings win. Case closed.
Hill #2: Anything Under 90ยฐF Is Beautiful Weather! ๐ง๏ธ
If Tucson could give me temperatures below 90ยฐF year-round, I would be happier than a pig in shit!
Give me mornings in the 50s and 60s, afternoons in the 70s or 80s, clouds drifting across the sky, and the occasional rainstorm. I want to open my windows, wear my favorite sweatshirts, and enjoy being outside without feeling like I’m slowly being cooked.
And who decided rain was bad weather?
Have you ever smelled the earth after a good rain or listened to raindrops tapping against the windows? Watched dark clouds roll across the sky while a cool breeze moves through the trees?
THAT is beautiful weather.
The sun can be lovely, but it doesn’t need to behave like it’s auditioning for the leading role in the apocalypse.
Some people love 110ยฐF. Good for them! They can have my share, too.
My hill has clouds, rain, and a comfortable breeze. Yours can have the heatstroke. ๐
Hill #3: Snow Is Wonderful, and Shoveling It Builds Character! โ๏ธ
Oh, I can already hear the objections.
“But you don’t have to shovel it!”
Actually, I grew up in New Jersey. I know EXACTLY what shoveling snow involves.
AND I NEVER MINDED DOING IT!
I love cold winter mornings, frosty windows, snow-covered rooftops, and neighborhoods transformed into beautiful white landscapes. There’s something magical about waking up after a snowfall and seeing the world covered in a soft blanket of white.
And yes, I enjoyed shoveling! It’s exercise, people. It builds character!
You bundle up, grab your shovel, clear the walkway, and accomplish something useful. Then you march your happy ass back inside, kick off those snowy boots, put your feet up, and enjoy a steaming mug of hot cocoa or magic bean potion.
You glance out the window at that freshly cleared walkway and think, Yep, I did that!
Meanwhile, here I am in Arizona, dreaming about snow while other people are celebrating never having to shovel again.
I’ll take the snow. You can keep the cactus-shaped oven.
Hill #4: Disney Magic Has NO Expiration Date! ๐งโโ๏ธโจ
YOU ARE NEVER TOO OLD FOR DISNEY!
I’m a die-hard Disney girl, and I have absolutely no intention of growing out of it. The movies, music, characters, parks, and magic have been part of my life for years.
And Tinker Bell?
TINK IS MY GIRL!
She’s tiny, feisty, stubborn, mischievous, and has absolutely no problem expressing herself. Honestly, what’s not to love?
Disney becomes especially magical for me during the fall and winter months. I love curling up with familiar movies, enjoying the Halloween favorites, and then moving into those wonderful holiday stories.
And yes, I’m ridiculously excited about wearing my Disney sweatshirt now that the weather is cooler.
Speaking of Disney, I got the Halloween skin for my castle in Disney Dreamlight Valley last night!
HALLOWEEN CASTLE, PEOPLE!!! ๐๐ฐ
I’ve also been working on decorating my Dreamlight Valley and Animal Crossing worlds, arranging orchards, moving houses, planning gardens, and creating beautiful little neighborhoods.
Which brings me to a bonus opinion: Not every hobby needs to become a side hustle.
Sometimes I want to read, work on diamond art, or decorate a virtual village simply because it makes me happy. I don’t need to monetize it, master it, or submit a quarterly productivity report.
If you’re 6, 16, 56, or 96, and you want to wear Mickey Mouse ears or get excited about a castle, DO IT!
This hill is covered in pixie dust, and I’m not moving.
Hill #5: Hollywood Needs ORIGINAL IDEAS! ๐ฌ
MOST MOVIES TODAY ARE REMAKES, REBOOTS, OR SEQUELS, AND I’M TIRED OF IT!
Seriously, Hollywood. Did you run out of original ideas? How many times do we need to remake the same movie or reboot the same franchise?
Not every beloved film needs to be dragged out of retirement, dusted off, and repackaged with different actors and a bigger special-effects budget.
Some movies were wonderful the first time.
LEAVE THEM ALONE!
Give me original stories, interesting characters, unexpected plots, and something that makes me excited to watch.
And while we’re discussing entertainment, I have another opinion.
WE DO NOT NEED BLATANT SEX IN EVERY MOVIE, TELEVISION SHOW, OR SONG!
Whatever happened to romance, chemistry, anticipation, and leaving something to the imagination? A lingering glance or passionate kiss can say more than fifteen minutes of explicit bedroom gymnastics.
We get it. They’re attracted to each other. Can we get back to the story now?
And I don’t need every character’s sexuality turned into an announcement or the centerpiece of their personality. People are more than who they’re attracted to. Give me interesting characters, clever dialogue, and stories with substance.
If sexuality is part of the story, tell it naturally. But don’t mistake shock value for creativity.
My hill has original screenplays and actual character development. Imagine that!
Hill #6: Music After 2010? MOST OF IT SUCKS! ๐ถ
There. I said it!
The 70s? FABULOUS! The 80s? ICONIC! The 90s? Fantastic music! Even the 2000s gave us plenty to enjoy.
But somewhere after 2010, I swear the music industry lost its damn mind.
Give me Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, Earth, Wind & Fire, the Bee Gees, classic country, old-school R&B, and some good rock and roll. I want music that makes me sing at the top of my lungs while driving or dance around my kitchen.
And before somebody comes charging at me with their favorite modern artist, relax. You’re allowed to love today’s music, and I’m allowed to think most of it sucks.
I’ll be on my hill with a fantastic playlist and absolutely no regrets. ๐
Hill #7: Concerts Are NOT Political Rallies! ๐ธ
LEAVE POLITICS OUT OF MY ENTERTAINMENT!
When I go to a concert, I want to hear the music, not sit through somebody’s political opinions.
I’m paying to hear the songs I love, sing until my voice gives out, and have a fantastic time. I’m not paying to attend a political rally disguised as a concert.
You have your opinions. I have mine. Wonderful!
Of course musicians and actors have every right to express themselves, and I have every right to wish they’d save the speeches for somewhere else.
Play the guitar. Pound those drums. Belt out the lyrics.
CAN WE JUST ENJOY THE DAMN MUSIC?!
I’ll be on this hill with my concert ticket, waiting for the band to actually play.
Hill #8: Books Do NOT Need Warning Labels! ๐
When did picking up a novel become something that requires a list of potential emotional hazards before you turn the first page?
I read because I want to explore different worlds, encounter complicated characters, and experience unexpected twists. I don’t need somebody telling me everything that might make me uncomfortable before I’ve even opened the cover.
If a book isn’t for me, I can put it down. If something bothers me, I can think about it or decide not to continue reading.
Give me the synopsis, let me read the book, and allow me to decide what I think of it.
Imagine that. An adult making her own reading decisions!
What a revolutionary concept! ๐
Hill #9: Witchy Gatekeepers Need to Mind Their Own Cauldrons! ๐ฎ๐งน
To the witches on TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and everywhere else who have appointed themselves the official authorities on witchcraft and spirituality:
CUT THE FUCKING SHIT WITH THE GATEKEEPING!
Seriously! Who died and made you the Supreme Witch of Everything?
I’m tired of seeing people telling other witches how they should practice, which deities they should work with, what tools they must own, and what supposedly makes someone a real witch.
Last time I checked, spirituality was personal.
My connection with nature, the elements, the goddesses and gods, animals, the ocean, the moon, and the world around me belongs to ME. It isn’t a competition, a popularity contest, or something that requires the approval of a stranger on social media.
You want to follow a particular tradition? Wonderful! You want elaborate rituals and a beautifully decorated altar? Knock yourself out! You prefer simple rituals, quiet moments outdoors, or following your intuition? Beautiful!
YOU DO YOUR THING, AND I’LL DO MINE!
We can share knowledge and respect traditions without competing over who is the most authentic witch in the room.
So, to the self-appointed witchcraft police, put down your imaginary badges, climb off your broomstick of superiority, and let people practice their spirituality in peace.
Blessed be, and mind your own cauldron! ๐
A Little October Magic Between the Hills ๐ป๐
Now, before somebody thinks I spend my entire day standing on hills yelling at people, let me assure you, I’ve been having a wonderful October!
Ronnie and I finished watching The Conjuring series, and we’ve moved on to Insidious. We haven’t watched The Nunmovies or the Annabelle movies yet, but don’t worry. They’re coming!
Apparently, nothing says a relaxing evening at home quite like voluntarily watching supernatural entities terrorize people.
And then, because balance is important, we switch over to Friends and Gilmore Girls. The little town of Stars Hollow, colorful leaves scattered along the sidewalks, cozy houses, endless cups of coffee, and wonderfully quirky characters make me want to pack a bag and move straight into a quaint northeastern village.
I grew up in New Jersey, and those charming little towns still have a hold on my heart.
Give me cozy blankets, my fur babies, a good movie, and a comfortable home filled with laughter. That’s a pretty wonderful evening in my book.
And here’s another opinion: Life is too short to keep putting off the fun!
There’s a possibility we’ll be heading to Tombstone for Helldorado Days this weekend. And apparently…
BILLY ZANE IS SUPPOSED TO BE THERE!!!
YES! THAT BILLY ZANE!
I WANT TO GO!!!
We’re not committed to going just yet, but after our California trip, I’ve been wanting more adventures and more opportunities to enjoy life.
Why wait for some grand occasion when there’s something interesting happening practically in our backyard?
Hill #10: STOP DRIVING LIKE AN ASSHOLE! ๐
While we’re discussing things that get on my nerves, can we PLEASE talk about the way people behave behind the wheel?
Somebody doesn’t move the exact millisecond the light turns green, and suddenly the person behind them is laying on the horn like they’re auditioning for a one-person brass band. Someone makes a turn a little slower than you’d prefer, and now you’re screaming obscenities through your windshield.
Congratulations! You’ve successfully raised your blood pressure, annoyed everyone within earshot, and accomplished absolutely nothing.
THE OTHER DRIVER CAN’T HEAR YOUR LITTLE TEMPER TANTRUM!
They’re in their own vehicle, probably listening to music or thinking about what they’re making for dinner. Meanwhile, you’re gripping the steering wheel, turning three shades of red, and delivering a profanity-filled monologue to an audience of absolutely nobody.
I’m not talking about using your horn to prevent an accident or alert someone to danger. That’s what it’s there for. I’m talking about the impatient, obnoxious honking because the entire world isn’t operating according to your personal schedule.
And while I’m on the subject, STOP DRIVING LIKE YOU’RE AUDITIONING FOR THE NEXT FAST & FURIOUS MOVIE!
I see people weaving through traffic, speeding from lane to lane, tailgating, and racing around as though the public roads are their personal racetrack. Where the hell are you going that’s so important you’re willing to risk somebody’s life to get there thirty seconds sooner?
And here’s what really gets me. Some of these people have passengers in their vehicles!
WHEN YOU HAVE OTHER PEOPLE IN YOUR CAR, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR LIVES!
Your spouse, your children, your friends, your family members. They trusted you enough to get into that vehicle with you. Their safety should matter more than your ego, impatience, or ridiculous need to prove how fast your car can go.
And let’s not forget the people sharing the road with you. The family in the minivan, the person driving home from work, the couple heading out for dinner. They didn’t sign up to participate in your personal NASCAR qualifying round.
If you want to race, find a racetrack.
THE INTERSTATE IS NOT THE INDY 500!
Leave a little space. Have a little patience. Let someone merge without acting like they’ve personally insulted your ancestors. You’re not getting a trophy for reaching the next red light three seconds before everyone else.
Getting there safely is more important than getting there first.
Hill #11: The Biggest Hill of All โ DON’T BE AN ASSHOLE TO PEOPLE! โค๏ธ
Now we’ve reached the biggest hill in my entire mountain range, and this one isn’t particularly funny.
STOP TREATING PEOPLE LIKE SHIT!
If you call a customer service center because something isn’t working, you’re frustrated, or you’ve had a terrible day, I understand. Technology breaks, bills get screwed up, companies make mistakes, and sometimes you just want to scream into a pillow.
But here’s something you need to understand.
THE PERSON ANSWERING YOUR CALL IS A HUMAN BEING!
They are not the company. They didn’t personally design the software, create the policy, raise your bill, or wake up that morning plotting ways to ruin your day. They’re someone sitting at a desk, wearing a headset, trying to help you solve a problem.
And you have absolutely no idea what that person might be going through.
Maybe they’re grieving someone they love. Maybe they’re dealing with financial problems, a sick family member, or a difficult situation at home. Maybe they’re exhausted, overwhelmed, or holding themselves together by a thread.
And then you call.
You can be the person who makes an already difficult day unbearable, or you can be the person who reminds them that there are still decent human beings in this world.
YOU CAN MAKE OR BREAK SOMEONE WITH THE WAY YOU TREAT THEM.
And let’s talk about those customer satisfaction surveys while we’re at it.
If someone genuinely helped you, treated you with respect, listened to your concerns, and did everything within their power to resolve your issue, give them the credit they deserve!
Don’t punish the person because you dislike a company policy, didn’t get the answer you wanted, or think the business should operate differently.
RATE THE PERSON WHO HELPED YOU, NOT YOUR ANGER AT THE COMPANY!
Sometimes that survey directly affects someone’s performance evaluation, opportunities, and livelihood. Your casual little click can carry a lot more weight than you realize.
And this doesn’t stop with call centers.
It applies to the cashier scanning your groceries, the server bringing your dinner, the barista making your coffee, the person stocking shelves, the hotel housekeeper, and every other human being you encounter throughout your day.
Say please and thank you. Be patient. Tip well when someone has earned it. Leave a glowing review when someone goes above and beyond. Tell a manager when an employee has done an outstanding job instead of only speaking up when something goes wrong.
And for the love of everything sacred, stop treating people in service positions like they’re beneath you.
Having a bad day doesn’t give you permission to ruin somebody else’s.
You can be frustrated. You can disagree. You can ask for a supervisor. You can expect a problem to be addressed without humiliating the person trying to help you.
KINDNESS IS FREE. BEING AN ASSHOLE IS A CHOICE.
I work in customer support. I know what it’s like to be on the other end of that phone. I know how much a kind word, a little patience, or a sincere thank-you can mean after a difficult interaction.
And I know how deeply someone’s cruelty can linger long after the call has ended.
So if there’s one hill I’m willing to plant my flag on and refuse to budge from, it’s this one.
TREAT PEOPLE LIKE HUMAN BEINGS. BECAUSE THEY ARE.
Everything else in this post? We can laugh about it, argue over it, and have some fun.
But basic human kindness? That shouldn’t even be up for debate.
The View From the Top โค๏ธ
Well, my lovelies, we’ve made it to the top of my mountain range. I hope you brought comfortable shoes because apparently I had a LOT to say!
We don’t have to agree about the weather, music, movies, books, or whether shoveling snow is enjoyable. You can love summer while I dream about winter. You can enjoy modern music while I happily sing along to the Bee Gees.
We can disagree, laugh about it, and move on with our lives.
Imagine that!
But how we treat one another? That matters. We can have strong opinions, different beliefs, and completely opposite tastes while still treating people with kindness.
At 56, I have absolutely no intention of becoming less enthusiastic about the things that make me happy. If anything, I intend to become MORE enthusiastic, more curious, more playful, and more willing to try something new.
Growing older should never mean growing out of joy.
So now it’s your turn! What’s one completely harmless opinion you’ll defend until your dying breath? Does pineapple belong on pizza? Is the book always better than the movie? Are rainy days superior to sunny ones?
Tell me your wonderfully unnecessary strong opinions in the comments. Bonus points if they’re ridiculous enough to make me laugh!
And don’t worry, my lovelies. This was only Part 1. Apparently, I have more hills to climb, and something tells me Part 2 is going to be just as entertaining.
Until next time, wear the damn Disney sweatshirt, enjoy your magic bean potion, and remember that kindness costs absolutely nothing.
