Thirty-seven years of admiration, one Hollywood crush, and the unforgettable moment I finally met him.
I have a confession to make.
I’ve had a crush on Billy Zane for thirty-seven years.
Yes, THIRTY-SEVEN YEARS.
And on Saturday, October 17, 2026, I finally got to meet him.
Not on a movie screen. Not in a photograph. Not through an interview or one of those wonderful scenes that remind me exactly why I’ve admired him for so long.
I actually stood in front of Billy Zane, looked at that ridiculously handsome face, and attempted to have a normal conversation.
Attempted being the important word here.
Because apparently, after thirty-seven years of admiring someone’s talent, appreciating his gorgeous looks, and imagining what you might say if you ever met him, your brain can still decide to abandon you at the worst possible moment.
And mine did.
Spectacularly.
But before we get to my complete inability to function like a normal adult, I want to explain why meeting Billy meant so much to me.
Because this wasn’t simply about meeting a handsome actor.
It was about finally meeting someone whose work I’ve admired for most of my adult life.
The Handsome Face Caught My Attention. The Talent Kept It.
My admiration for Billy Zane began in 1989 with Dead Calm.
I remember being captivated by his performance as Hughie Warriner, the disturbed stranger whose presence transforms what should have been a peaceful sailing trip into something terrifying.
Billy was handsome, absolutely. But what really caught my attention was his ability to portray someone so unsettling. There was something about the way he moved between charm, unpredictability, and danger that made the character impossible to ignore.
And that was only the beginning.
Over the years, I’ve watched Billy take on an incredible variety of roles. He can portray a villain you absolutely despise, a demon who makes you laugh while he’s being terrifying, a romantic leading man, or someone whose personality is far more complicated than it first appears.
Think about Cal Hockley in Titanic. Billy made that character so arrogant, controlling, and entitled that you wanted to reach through the screen and slap him. Cal was a narcissistic nightmare, but the performance was fantastic.

Then there’s the Collector in Demon Knight, a character who is wicked, sarcastic, theatrical, and completely outrageous. He’s a demon, for goodness’ sake, yet Billy manages to make him one of the most entertaining parts of the movie.
In The Phantom, he stepped into the role of a mysterious, heroic, romantic leading man. In Tombstone, he portrayed Mr. Fabian, bringing a theatrical charm to the Western setting. And I’ve enjoyed seeing him in Charmed, too.
That’s what I love about his work.
He doesn’t have to play the hero for me to enjoy watching him. In fact, sometimes his villains are the most memorable characters in the entire story.
He can make you uncomfortable, make you laugh, make you angry, or make you swoon, depending on the role.
And that takes talent.
The handsome face caught my attention. The talent kept it.
For thirty-seven years.
Greek Heritage, Hazel Eyes, and One Ridiculously Handsome Man
Now, having established that I genuinely admire Billy’s talent, can we please discuss the other obvious reason I’ve been a fan for so long?

THE MAN IS GORGEOUS.
I mean, seriously.
Billy Zane is sixty years old, and he looks absolutely incredible.
The Greek heritage, those gorgeous hazel eyes, his smile, that unmistakable voice, and the confidence with which he carries himself all contribute to that classic tall, dark, and handsome appeal.
I’ve always appreciated that particular combination, and Billy has it in abundance.
And then, as if I wasn’t already going to be nervous enough, he appeared in Tombstone wearing a cowboy hat, a leather jacket, and a scarf.
SIR.
WAS THAT REALLY NECESSARY?
I was trying to prepare myself to meet someone I’ve admired for decades, and there he was looking as though he’d stepped straight out of a romantic Western movie.
Good Lord.
There’s something about seeing someone in person that photographs and movies simply can’t capture. It’s the expressions, the smile, the way they carry themselves, and those little details that make someone seem so much more real.
And Billy has that presence.
He’s charming, confident, and effortlessly handsome.
Some men age like fine wine.
Billy Zane apparently decided to become the entire vineyard.
And I’m not taking that back.
The Moment I’d Been Waiting Thirty-Seven Years For
Ronnie and I had traveled to Tombstone, Arizona, for Helldorado Days, where Billy was making an appearance at Wyatt Earp’s Oriental Saloon.

I’d been excited about the possibility of meeting him from the moment I learned he’d be there. I did my hair and makeup, got dressed for the occasion, and spent the day enjoying Tombstone with Ronnie while looking forward to the big moment.
In my head, I had a list of things I wanted to say.
I wanted to tell Billy how much I’d enjoyed his performances over the years. I wanted to ask about some of his favorite roles, whether he had any upcoming projects, and what he’d enjoyed most about working on certain films.
I imagined myself being perfectly composed, friendly, and conversational.
And then I saw him.
There he was, standing right in front of me, looking every bit as handsome as I’d imagined.
Suddenly, all those carefully prepared questions disappeared.
I became nervous, excited, and completely overwhelmed by the realization that I was actually meeting someone I’d admired since 1989.
My brain went POOF!

Somehow, I managed to tell him I’d been a fan since Dead Calm.
And he responded, “A loyal fan.”
That little comment made me smile because it was true. I’ve been watching his work for decades, through different films and different characters, and I wanted him to know how long I’d appreciated his talent.
But apparently, my nervousness wasn’t going to stop me from making one very important confession.
Yes, I Told Billy Zane He’s Been My Longtime Crush!
I actually told Billy Zane that he’d been my Hollywood crush for years.
Right there.
To his face.
I don’t know where that sudden burst of courage came from, considering I could barely remember my own name, but somehow I managed to say it.
And his response?
He told me how sweet I was for saying that.
OH, MY HEART.
Here was this man I’d thought was gorgeous for decades, and instead of making the moment awkward, he responded with kindness and charm.
Of course, that only made me smile more.
And then Ronnie decided to join the conversation.
Now, my husband knows all about my Hollywood crushes. Over the years, there have been Rob Lowe, Matt Dillon, Kirk Cameron, Keanu Reeves, David Schwimmer, and Billy Zane.
Different actors have caught my attention at different times, but Billy has always been one of my longtime favorites.
So when I told Billy about my crush, Ronnie decided to confirm it.
And then he said something that still makes me laugh.
“You even overpower Keanu.”
RONNIE!
My husband actually told Billy Zane that he outranks Keanu Reeves on my celebrity-crush list!
I was already nervous enough, and now Ronnie was cheerfully explaining my Hollywood crush hierarchy to the man himself.
And the funniest part?
He wasn’t wrong.
I’ve always appreciated Keanu Reeves, but Billy has held a special place on that list for a very long time.
Apparently, Ronnie thought Billy deserved to know exactly where he stood.
I love my husband.
And I love that he was enjoying the experience right along with me.
Ronnie and Billy Talked About Demon Knight
While I was busy trying to remember how to function, Ronnie managed to have a conversation with Billy about one of his favorite movies, Demon Knight.
Ronnie absolutely loves that movie, and he told Billy it was his favorite.
Billy responded that it was one of his favorites, too, and that he’d had fun making it.
How wonderful is that?
Ronnie got to tell an actor he admired how much he enjoyed his performance, and Billy shared that he’d enjoyed working on the film.
Now, I have to confess something.
Demon Knight has never been one of my favorite movies.
Some of those horror scenes are downright disgusting. I’m talking about the kind of stuff that makes me want to gag. There are moments when I find myself wondering why anyone thought I needed to see something quite that revolting.
But Billy’s performance?
I LOVE IT.
The Collector is wicked, sarcastic, theatrical, and absolutely hilarious. One of my favorite moments is his cowboy rant when he tears off his duster. The expressions, the delivery, and that outrageous attitude make the scene hysterical to me.
Billy manages to make a demonic villain entertaining without taking away from the danger of the character.
That’s exactly the versatility I’ve admired for so long.
And now Ronnie had actually spoken to him about it!
Later, after we’d left the saloon, I think the experience finally started sinking in for Ronnie.
He suddenly exclaimed, “That is so freaking cool!!”
YES, RONNIE!
WE MET BILLY FREAKING ZANE!
And I love that he had his own moment of excitement.
The Titanic Autograph I’ll Treasure Forever
Of course, there was no way I was leaving without an autograph.
We spent $150 on the autograph experience, and while that’s not something we do every day, this was a special occasion.
I’d been admiring Billy’s work for thirty-seven years. I wanted something tangible to remember the experience.
When it came time to choose a photograph, I selected one of Billy as Cal Hockley from Titanic.
Now, let’s be perfectly clear.
Cal Hockley was an absolutely terrible boyfriend. He was arrogant, controlling, entitled, and thoroughly unpleasant.
But Billy portrayed him beautifully.
And can we also acknowledge how handsome he looked in that movie?
The tuxedo, the hair, the expressions, the entire appearance.
Good grief!
I knew that was the photograph I wanted.
What made it even more special was that Billy personalized it to both Ronnie and me.
It’s not simply an autograph. It’s a keepsake from a memory we shared together.
And it’s absolutely getting framed.
I can already imagine looking at it years from now and remembering that Saturday in Tombstone, the conversation, the photographs, and the ridiculous smile I couldn’t seem to wipe off my face.
It’s something I’ll treasure.
One Small Gesture That Meant So Much
There’s another moment from our meeting that I want to remember.
As Ronnie and I were leaving, Billy reminded us to be careful driving home because of the strong winds.
It was such a simple thing, but I appreciated it.
He didn’t have to say anything beyond goodbye, yet he took a moment to wish us a safe trip.
When you’ve admired someone for years, you never really know what meeting them will be like. You hope they’ll be friendly and pleasant, but you don’t know until you’re standing in front of them.
During our brief interaction, Billy was charming, gracious, and thoughtful.
He was sweet when I told him about my longtime crush, friendly when Ronnie talked about Demon Knight, and considerate enough to mention the weather before we left.
And honestly, meeting him only made me appreciate him more.
Guess What We Watched When We Got Home?
After a full day in Tombstone, Ronnie and I eventually made our way home, got settled, and decided there was only one appropriate movie to watch that evening.
Demon Knight.
Of course!
We’d just met Billy Zane, Ronnie had told him it was his favorite movie, and Billy had shared that he’d enjoyed making it.
How could we possibly watch anything else?
So there we were, sitting at home watching the Collector cause all kinds of demonic chaos, only hours after standing beside the actor who portrayed him.
And every so often, the realization would hit us all over again.
We’d actually met that man earlier in the day.
Ronnie was enjoying one of his favorite movies, and I was appreciating Billy’s wonderfully sarcastic performance while occasionally questioning whether I really needed to see some of those more disgusting horror scenes.
Marriage is all about compromise, after all.
But the movie felt different this time.
We weren’t simply watching an actor we’d enjoyed for years. We were watching someone we’d just spoken with, someone who’d shared a little story about enjoying the role, and someone who’d helped make our Saturday unforgettable.
It’s funny how an experience like that can change the way you watch something familiar.
The Things I Wish I’d Said
Now that I’ve had time to think about everything, there’s one thing I wish I’d done differently.
I wish I’d slowed down.
I wish I’d stayed a little longer and allowed myself to enjoy the conversation instead of rushing through it. Not because anyone made me feel hurried, but because I was so nervous that I rushed myself.
I’d wanted to ask about upcoming projects, favorite roles, and some of the performances I’ve enjoyed over the years. I wanted to talk about his versatility and tell him how much I appreciate the way he brings such different characters to life.
But once I was standing in front of him, my carefully planned questions disappeared.
I was excited, nervous, and probably trying a little too hard to be considerate of his time.
Looking back, I wish I’d simply relaxed and enjoyed the moment.
But here’s the thing.
I don’t regret the experience for a second.
I got to tell him I’d been a fan since Dead Calm. I told him he’d been my longtime crush, and he responded so sweetly. Ronnie got to talk about Demon Knight, and we came home with photographs and a personalized Titanic autograph.
Those are wonderful memories.
And even if I didn’t manage to say everything I’d planned, I said some of the things that mattered most.
Apparently, We’re Going Back!
One of my favorite parts of the entire experience happened afterward, when Ronnie told me that the next time Billy Zane comes to Tombstone, we’re going again.
And next time, he wants us to stay longer, talk more, take additional photographs, and maybe even get a video.
How sweet is that?
I love that Ronnie understands how much this meant to me. He knows how excited I was, and rather than teasing me about wanting another opportunity, he’s already talking about making it happen.
Next time, I’m going to be prepared.
I’ll have my questions ready, I’ll know exactly what I want to say, and I’ll make sure I give myself time to enjoy the experience.
At least, that’s the plan.
Of course, there’s also a very real possibility that I’ll see Billy standing there with those hazel eyes and that gorgeous smile, and my brain will immediately go POOF all over again.
I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see.
More Than Just Meeting a Hollywood Crush
When I look back on that Saturday, I realize how special it was to finally meet someone I’ve admired for so long.
It wasn’t simply about standing next to a handsome actor or bringing home an autograph. It was about getting to tell someone how much I’d appreciated his work over the years and discovering that he was genuinely pleasant during our brief interaction.
It was also about sharing the experience with Ronnie.
My husband stood beside me while I nervously told Billy Zane he’d been my longtime crush, announced that Billy outranks Keanu Reeves, and then got to have his own conversation about one of his favorite movies.
We laughed, took photographs, and came home with a memory neither of us will forget.
And that’s something I appreciate more than I can explain.
I’ve been thinking a lot about what it means to genuinely enjoy life rather than simply move through the days. I want more experiences that make me laugh, more moments that remind me how much there is to discover, and more stories that I’ll enjoy telling afterward.
Sometimes that means exploring a new place. Sometimes it means trying something different. And sometimes it means standing in front of a Hollywood crush you’ve admired for thirty-seven years and completely forgetting how to speak.
If you’d like to read about the rest of our Saturday in Tombstone, including the historic streets, favorite shops, wonderful treasures, and little discoveries we brought home, you can find that adventure in Tombstone, Treasures & a Little Wild West Magic.
Because meeting Billy was only one part of a wonderful day.
But what an unforgettable part it was.
Billy Zane, Thank You! ❤️
Billy, if you ever happen to read this, thank you.
Thank you for taking the time to meet Ronnie and me, for the photographs and the personalized autograph, and for being so kind during our brief conversation. Thank you for calling me a loyal fan, for being sweet when I admitted you’d been my longtime crush, and for talking with Ronnie about Demon Knight.
Even your simple reminder to be careful driving home because of the winds was appreciated.
I’ve admired your work since Dead Calm, and finally getting to meet you was something I’ll never forget. Your ability to bring such different characters to life has entertained me for decades, and I hope you know how much your performances have meant to the people who’ve followed your career.
And yes, I still think you’re ridiculously handsome.
Those hazel eyes certainly didn’t help my ability to think clearly, but I think we’ve established that by now!
As for Ronnie and me, we’re already hoping for another opportunity to meet you. Maybe next time I’ll manage a longer conversation, ask those questions I forgot, and actually remember how to behave like a functioning adult.
No promises, though.
Until then, I’ll be enjoying our photographs, finding the perfect place to display my Titanic autograph, and occasionally reminding Ronnie of one very important fact.
WE MET BILLY FREAKING ZANE!
And yes, I’m still fangirling.
Until the next adventure,
Rae ❤️
